The Institute of Space Technologies is one of the leading institutes of SibSAU, with departments whose history goes back to the establishment of the University.

In the 1960s, when the first University departments were established, their names were coded with only some people knowing what specialists they trained. For the wider audience, it was said: “We train multi-skilled engineers.” Today this formerly secret information is known to everyone. The Institute consists of the department of aircraft, the department of aircraft engines, and the automated management systems department. Their graduates become the most competitive engineers in rocket construction, rocket engines, aircraft management systems, space systems, and upper-stage rockets.

Over its 50-year history, the training of specialists has been implemented jointly with the enterprises: “Krasmash State Enterprise” – the biggest industrial enterprise for rocket and space construction; “Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems” (ISS) – one of the leading enterprises for design, production, and operation of space communication systems, telecasting, navigation, and geodesy. There are departments in the Institute that correspond exactly with these areas. As Russia has undergone great changes, the educational system has changed as well. However, the Institute always maintained its principles in engineering training. The training extends from gaining a working profession to achieving working skills for those who hold engineering positions. Due to this educational system, graduates of the University have always been in demand in the labor market.

The development of this integrated training system is still in progress today. The enterprises have the ability to influence the educational process and devote funds for a certain students body. At the end of their education the graduates are employed by these enterprises.

One new mode of integrated training is research and team learning through the implementation of a project by a team of students, instructors, and specialists from these enterprises. A prime example is the project of Students’ Small Satellite Space Vehicles. All technical departments and even Humanities departments were involved in the implementation of this project. The close interaction with the specialists of ISS allowed the students to create, launch, and manage space vehicles. Today, students together with the enterprises, implement projects from the modeling to assembling to deploying of space vehicles.
